For this project we were asked by our professor to design an infographic poster for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) that will be used in doctors offices around the country, as part of a campaign about Type 2 Diabetes.

Professor Alberto Cairo asked us to explain what is Diabetes and how it works. Also, we should provide statistics about the illness in the country and if possible compare regions or U.S. with other countries.

Last but not least, we were asked to dedicate a part of the poster to treatment and prevention. This last part caught my attention.

Since I have a backgroung in the medical field, I know for a fact that one of the biggest consequences of Type 2 Diabetes is amputations or ulcers on feet. Therefore, I decided my poster central theme will be about dibetic foot and its prevention.
My poster's central theme had to be a foot. I took a picture of a friend's foot when he was visiting me. Then I vectorize it on Illustrator, basically I drawn over the image in a separate layer.
After I was done with the foot, I also vectorized an image of two hands testing for blood sugar level.

I also decided that the statistics that I would use would be the one showing how the disease affects each race in the U.S. And I created some icons representing different races.

My research did not limit only to the ADA, I also looked for information from other sources including the US Census Bureau.
I wanted to integrate the graphic with the icons. Above you can see how I tried to play with the images inside a bar diagram.
The background color changed too. I thought a lighter color will capture patients eyes in exam rooms easier.
Certain graphic styles were not showing what I wanted.
In the final poster I showed how Diabetes Neuropathies are signs that patients should pay attention to. You can see I highlighted the prevention section and gave importance to some symptoms of neuropathies.
