Research: The resplendent quetzal is Guatemala’s national bird. It is a large part of their culture and is on their flag, money, etc. The bird is known for its importance in Mesoamerican mythology. It guided the Maya warrior in battle against the Spanish. The warrior was killed, and the bird flew down on his chest, and was stained red. Its feathers were used in royalty’s headdresses, but killing the bird was forbidden, so they plucked feathers from the tail or collected the ones that fell
