A equipment allows to pair two types of protocols together. For example, your network uses IP protocol and someone else's network uses IPX, Novell, DECnet, SNA... or some other protocol, the Gateway will switch from one protocol type to another. Through the Gateway, computers in the network using different protocols can easily "talk" to each other. Gateways not only distinguish protocols, but can also differentiate applications such as how you transfer email from one network to another, transfer remote working versions, etc.
