The book is a collection of interviews with female artists about the influence motherhood has had on their work, the struggle to find balance between the artistic drive and the maternal instinct, as well as the challenging relationships between mothers and daughters, who share a love for art.
Emphasis was put on the unique connection between mothers and their children, symbolised by the thread. This relationship, though seemingly unbreakable, may in time also entangle both parties, resulting in limitations to their freedom.
The gold Pantone cover has perforated dots allowing it to be sown and a needle and thread are attached to each copy of the book. By encouraging the recipient to “decorated” their copy, each book can become a unique piece, just like motherhood is a unique experience for each of the presented artists.
For the design concept, the popular pink and skin-toned colors – so associated with maternal topics – were rejected. Instead, a distinctive energetic Pantone green was used throughout the book. The text was set in a dynamic way. Paragraphs were strongly accented, creating active line segments, and interview questions were underlined. The outline of text was frequently used in titles and page numbers, to give the spreads a stitch-like character.
Each new interview begins with a page presenting a different pattern, associated with the craft of embroidery. The design is consistent with the grid of cover, and can easily be implemented.
The last 32 pages of the book – printed in full color – serve as a display of the artist's work.
