Wooden Door

This quick logo was for a friend and author, Colin Fox, who wanted a 'logo or some kind of unifying design element' for self publishing initiatives. When asked why he chose the title 'wooden door' Colin said his thoughts were for something like the fresh stripped down natural niche type of cool, of hardwood floors, the feeling of openness or inviting like an open door.
Knowing Colin had a more offbeat sense of humor I had designed one of his book covers some years before, pretending that I thought the book title was 'Over Easy (the egg) Street' and not it's true meaning 'Over (above) Easy Street'.
Continuing in that vein I was inspired to make more quirky versions of what a wooden door could be. I knew that Colin would like something fantastical or metaphorical would be better than something literal.
Concept 1: Four 'O's (a design gift)
I couldn't miss the opportunity to take advantage of the 4 'O's in Wooden Door to make a common four panel door for an entirely type based solution.
Concept 2: Tree rings
Next I looked at tree trunks hoping to find something there...
By combining a tree trunk cross-section and the type I was able to twist the grain using the spiral tool to create a more 'woodlike' effect.
Concept 3: Doors of Perception
I thought of a doorway to a hidden world using negative space but it looks too sinister...
...but a doorway in a tree trunk somehow had the mystical quality I was aiming for. A stock illustration of a tree helped and Colin agreed without hesitation that this was the logo that he wanted.
