This new map explores the commuter rail services in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
Home to over 5 million people, the coastal city is the largest city in East Africa and one of the fastest growing urban area of the African continent

As of today, the former Tanzanian capital city is served by two commuter lines -each being operated by a different company

Tanzanian Railways Corporation (TRC) runs twelve trains per day between Dar Es Salaam Central Station and Pugu (six in each direction) and the same number of trains between Dar Central and Ubungo Maziwa
Service operates at rush hours only, five days a week with no service on weekends
Tazara operates between their own Dar Es Salaam Tazara terminal and Mwakanga, five days a week excluding weekends

Each line is part of the wider national rail network but have this distinctive feature of having different gauges: TRC uses the national 1,000mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) gauge track standard while Tazara - whose line goes all the way to Zambia - uses 1,067mm (3ft 6in) gauge tracks

Despite trains services, mobility in Dar Es Salaam still heavily relies on fleets of informal minibuses, motorcycle transit, shared taxis and rickshaw and the use of private cars; none helping to alleviate road congestion inherent to most larger cities the world over

That's why Dar Es Salaam is currently on its way to implement new BRT services whose phase one has already been in service since 2016 and that I will show you on a new, augmented iteration of the present map in another project
