Background
The narco corridos, a phenomenon that only occurs in Mexico, are very powerful. The genre is the most listened to in the country and it's deeply rooted in the culture regardless of the social class. Currently, the singer-songwriters of the genre have displaced international stars only with reproductions from Mexico.
While some regional Mexican music groups make money and a career out of writing songs about the narco, Mexican journalists are being killed for doing the same thing. Just in 2022, 67 journalists and media workers were killed for reporting the truth about organized crime.
Idea
In a land of crime, we played a different tune.Ā We hacked the most listened narco corridos playlists with a story silenced by the narco.
In collaboration with one of the most popular regional singers and writers, Vivir Quintana, we created a corrido so everyone can hear the silenced story of Milo Vela, a Mexican journalist killed by organized crime.
