Medical oncologists
Medical oncologists aim to provide the best possible outcome for cancer patients, either preventive or prolonging palliation and good quality of life. Medical oncologists treat patients with localized or metastatic malignancies that require systemic treatment. They also treat patients whose cancer is cured by surgery, but additional treatment for them will improve their prognosis.
Medical and clinical oncologists often work together, and clinical oncology covers both the therapeutic administration of ionizing radiation (radiation therapy) and cytotoxic chemotherapy. However, radiation therapy is only performed by clinical oncologists.
