Continuing the theme of rocks and temples, 'Girikumbila Tissa Pawwa'—known since the British colonial period as 'Rajagala' - is illustrated, reflecting the identical shape of the rock range on which lies one of ancient Sri Lanka’s vast and unique monasteries. Moving away from the use of intricate details, this illustration follows a minimalist style but maintains the traditional use of symbols to depict both the sacred and humorous. Illustrated as reaching upwards, as if to cover the entire space, is the 'chatra', the timeless symbol of honour, found on this site in the form of a number of 2nd century stone chatras (umbrellas). Sunk within the mass is... a cheeky crocodile – the humorous pun on the ancient name of the site.
