Creative Strategies
Graphic Design Project
As a Graphic Design student at BYUI we were assigned a project to create 6 concept images that are related to the 6 creative design strategies using one every-day object. The object I chose to work with was a quarter. I was a little apprehensive about designing in Photoshop, but ended up learning so much and having fun along the way! Here are my designs.
THE PROCESS
First I began the process by brainstorming ideas and qualities of the quarter, then drew some rough sketches and then created some rough digital elements. There were some elements I liked from these mock-ups, but you will see in the final drawings that I deviated from some of the designs and fine-tuned them to provide a stronger connection to the design and object.
ISOLATION
This concept was probably one of the most difficult for me to wrap my head around, to isolate the object from its normal setting to show in a different view. I liked the idea of isolating the quarter with something completely different but the same shape repeated.

Here is George Buttington trying to fit in with the other buttons. He tries to match their colors, but he is still not one of them.
COMBINATION
This image was the funnest to make in combining unrelated object to make a cohesive image. I liked the idea of combining the quarter and bubblegum as it reminds me of being a little kid and putting a quarter in the gum ball machine.

This is George bubblegummington kicking back having a good time blowing some bubbles.
CONTEXT
This one was to change the environment of the object to create a theme of communication. I decided to match the quarter up with a building in Washington D.C.. The Capital had such a great dome shape to combine with the quarter.

Here is GEORGE is on all "Capitols" - ok that one is a bad pun, but get all Capitol vs. Capital?
MATERIAL CHANGE
This design of changing the object's material went through a couple different variations that you can see in my sketches. I landed on changing the face in the quarter with as paper of the constitution to complete the transition of quarter to paper.

PHYSICAL SHAPE
Another fun one to make. The idea of creating an image that combines similar physical shapes. As I was thinking about round shapes to make for this design, I remembered one of my favorite things - disco balls, I mean who doesn't love them?!

METAPHOR/SIMILE
This concept is to relate the object with another that provides meaning and similarity in thought. Americana is relatable to the quarter so I chose the American flag and made each of the stars a different state represented quarter.
