Lisbon when it's Drag

Drag is a theatre. The stage is anywhere one appears. The series of portraits of drag queens of Lisbon is an attempt to immerse in their performance, explore their stories and adapt them to the format of stills. Who are these dazzling creatures that stand out, no matter you like them or not? Exaggerated and extravagant, they construct themselves putting together their admiration of cinema divas, glamour and their personal stories and pain. In my opinion that makes their self-invented personalities inseparable from their masculine (or sometimes feminine) selves. It goes further than just a stage performance, as any place serves as a theatre scene. Actually, that’s the point of my interest: life as an artwork.
I’m not looking for truth, it's an exploration of life as an art form. Once we abandon the search for truth we start creating ourselves in much the same way that artist creates art. That’s pretty much about drag culture.
All stories captured by my camera had happened in real life. Or hadn’t. Depends on how personal you take theatre.

Drag queens captured: Belle Dommage, Dama de Paus, Ella The Queen, Keyla Brazil, Lexa BlacK, MariLynn Van D’Whors. Artist perform in Netherland, Spain, Cabe Verde and other countries.
The series were exposed at Todos festival in Lisbon as a part of the exhibition SÃO VICENTE DE FORA PARA DENTRO. 19-22 September 2019, Escola Oficina n.º 1
