2023 Personal Monogram [MODULAR]

Lego DOTS immediately grabbed me when they were first launched in the otherwise Godawful 2020. I could immediately see the potential for fun logo and monogram design, using the principles of Bauhaus and De Stijl.

After a successful 36 Days of Type campaign in 2022, I created a Skillshare Class about the process, and this project is the fruits of that.

I took a Graphic Designer's approach by first "sketching" some ideas, which is usually a slow process using Lego, but fairly quick and fun using modular parts.
Once I started on the O, the final idea hit me like a four ton truck and I immediately built what would be my final option.

Since my monogram is actually just a simple monoline design made from only 9 parts, I could play with colour to convey different moods or modes.

Retro, DIY, Sport, and Winter.
RETRO

These colours recall everything from BMX clothing to Powell Peralta skateboards and sweets packaging. My childhood, and most of my retro interests, are mustard yellow and fire engine red.
DIY
This mechanical colourway was inspired by safety vests, power tools and construction companies.
I roll up my sleeves for any DIY, and this is my personal brand for that hobby.

SPORT
Lavender has been Pantone colour of the year throughout the pandemic and beyond.
When paired with neon yellow, it screams summer sportswear, inline skates and stickers.
WINTER
Or more specifically, winter sports. White and black for Ice Hockey boots, rinks and gloves.
