For this project we were to use repurposed items to create a new design.

I began with the inspiration of RISD Fleet Library's lighting system among the bookshelves. Instead of mounting lights from the ceiling, lights were integrated into the tops of the book shelves which not only avoided being blocked by the mass of the bookshelves themselves, but created an attractive effect when the light passed over rows of books. I also studied book sculpture and paper folding and was intrigued by the way light passed over the layers of pages.
I decided to create a lighting installation that could be used in study areas in libraries by repurposing a book.
"By cutting out the center of consecutive pages in different shapes, I can control the characteristics of the light that passes through."
Initial concepts were a bit too decorative and obtrusive. I wanted a more subtle approach, and sketched out more ideas accordingly. I ended up with a wall mounted design. This more minimal design not only gave the lamp a cleaner look, but also enhanced user experience when seeing the book light up for the first time.
