Book design for Tomasz Łysiak's The Citadel - a historical novel, depicting events that took place in Warsaw in 1862 and that lead to The January Uprising (1863)

Author's vast collection of  documents and objects from the period, served as inspiration for the editorial form.
Finding modern means that echo a traditional book binding techniques, but not mimic them blindly, was quite a challenge.

A relatively small format (13,5 x 18 cm) was used to evoke more private, intimate process of reading.
A "biblically" thin paper was used for that purpose as well.

Some of prints and objects, gathered by Mr Łysiak during the research process,
were reprinted in their original size and placed randomly in the book.

The inserts are held in place by a "closed" dust jacked.

In May 2014 The Citadel won in "54. Competition for the Most Beautiful Book of the Year", held by PTWK (Polish Book Publishers Associacion).
