Artist Zine
In this project, an A5 artist zine should be developed based on ethical practices and
principles of a design discipline and sector of choice.
The field I’m exploring lies within the ethics of game designs for children between the age of 3-5 years old. This is a stage where kids are emotionally and psychologically vulnerable. Any content shown to them can have a long term positive or negative effect on them, which means that the games should be thoroughly planned out.
The problem that occurs is children are vulnerable and that games can have
a long term psychological effect on them for instance not knowing the kid has epilepsy and
designing a game with flashes or not considering the age restriction on younger kids,
exposing them to violence. An example of a successful edutainment game in Tinybop, who provides hours of high quality educational fun, giving children the opportunity to learn about buildings around the world, space, physics, maths and even different cultures.
The aim of the project is to create awareness of the ethical principles around edutainment
gaming for children. The style used is flat vector illustrations with bright colours, to mimic the feel of gaming for kids but reaching my target audience on a professional level-the game developers.
