Oratio – Terrence Malick

Oratio
Terrence Malick
Based on Terrence Malick’s work, an identity and an informative catalogue were designed for a film festival. Humanity, chaos, the meaning of life, and the universe, are just some of the themes that are found among Malick's films.

The identity of the festival, Oratio, which in Latin means “word”, “speak”, “voice”, represents the inspirational monologues given by the main characters in Malick’s movies, encouraging the spectator to experience the emotion from the characters’ point of view.

Simplicity was the main focus when designing this catalogue in order to communicate the message effectively. One side of the catalogue includes all the information on the film festival, such as the schedule, details about the event, the director, the screened movies, and the sponsors, all presented in a straight forward manner. The other side of the piece showcases stills from movies. What’s unique about this catalogue is the format. With the intent to break the standards and to make the piece stand out, the catalogue was designed as an accordion fold to resemble a movie strip.

Consistency, balance and contrast also play a big role. Limited fonts and a minimal colour palette make the design clean and easy to read. This also allows for a more interesting and unique layout throughout the catalogue to keep the reader engaged.
