Surface Design: An exploration of textures, patterns and materials.

The surface design of an object is an integral part of the object itself. It can be decorated in such a way that the key aspects of the object’s function are encoded or it may serve only to present an engaging aesthetic. It may be a thing that has been applied onto the surface or it may be integral to the material and the object itself.

This project explores a wide range of surfaces and materials using a range of techniques to construct and produce surface designs. The techniques include knitting, fiber etching, vacuum forming, laser cutting, shirring, felting and more. With a chosen concept of Lepidoptera (order of insects that includes moths and butterflies with key feature of scales covering their wings), research of visual sources and idea developments were carried out to produce surface designs which can be applied to fashion.

Deliverables include:
– Physical samples of different surface design techniques
– Process book showcasing different techniques and ideas
– Concept Mood Board
– Design Sample Board
– Design Application Board
