Chaillot {visual identity, poster design}

2022 — Chaillot - National Theatre of Dance | Palais de Chaillot, Paris - France
Design of the new visual identity (call for tenders) for Chaillot - Théâtre national de la Danse, a prestigious public institution whose architecture, history and creativity define a symbolic place. The brief was to affirm the singularity of the theatre and the values of the new artistic project.

The evocation of dance through graphic design is particularly inspiring and interesting, because they share the same raw material, namely the sign, the gesture and the motion.

The idea is to build a relevant and vibrant graphic system combining historical references and contemporary design, and contrasting with the classic visual environment, that often uses photography. That’s why typography is the leading element of the graphic system.
The sans serif Granville (Jean-Baptiste Levée, Production Type) echoes the 20th century Peignot typeface (Charles Peignot and Cassandre), used for the signage of the 1937 Universal Exhibition and for Paul Valéry’s inscriptions on the pediment of the Palais de Chaillot.
The layout and the typographic compositions of the posters, illustrate how conceptual and formal choices create a graphic system that represents the image of the theatre, instead of representing the image of the performance.
