Information design: Joyce's lunch map

Final version of the map.
Imagine a friend shows up at your house unexpectedly looking to spend the night. You don't have time to speak with them, but you want to meet them for lunch the following day. That's the scenario Prof. Moyer gave us to design for with this quick print piece.

I designed a simple map that my friend Joyce could hold in front of her as she walks, rotating it as she turns left and right.
My first rendition was a little bare and unexciting. I added in a few shops, approximating the way their facades appear to the street in my illustrations. I chose shops that I knew would pique Joyce's interest.

In multiple iterations of the map, my classmates indicated that the simplified shape of the destination building was disorienting. I added the long back hallway, which isn't visible from the road, but would be important for Joyce to orient herself if she takes a wrong turn.
I created the store illustations to match the actual appearance of the shops on Forbes Avenue.
