Sputnik Sweetheart Book Trailer

The final assignment for my Dynamic Imagery class was to make a book trailer for any book we choose. Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami was the first one that came to my head because of how surreal the entire experience of reading it was, and also the only book I fully remember as of now, so I thought it'd be fun to animate.

The biggest challenge was finding an art style that fit the tone of the story and I thought pastels would be best. Because of time constraints, I also had to figure out how I should animate the moving parts, because my first thought was rotoscoping but I knew that would take me way longer than 3 weeks, especially because of the amount of scenes I had.

I think my favorite part of making this was putting everything into After Effects along with the music. I never intended for the animation to match some of the notes of the music, but some parts naturally matched up with a little bit of tweaking, which made me unnaturally excited when I watched it through.
Music: Martha Argerich (2019) – Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 1, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQqQcWoTPaU
Voice: Andrea Lastimosa - Sumire, Hallie Le - Miu
Other notes: Sumire means violet in Japanese, one of the main characters in the book; The song in the background was also mentioned in the book;  The end scene is of Greece; The references of Sumire (purple) were of me, the references of Miu (blue) were of my friend Riddhi, and the references of K were from my incredibly patient boyfriend Irbin.
