This project started from my love of movies throughout the years. There have been so many films that have inspired my artworks in the last decade or so but none of them were as important as La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1928).
The Passion of Joan of Arc is directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, a world-renown Danish film director from the silent movie era. I remember seeing this movie for the first time. Really didn't know what to expect. And also this was my very first time watching a silent movie. Right from the first frame, this movie hypnotized me. Renée Jeanne Falconetti, the main actress who plays Joan is breathtaking. For a movie that is almost a century old Falconetti´s acting still feels contemporary and timeless.
1000°C is a tribute to this amazing movie, a detailed examination of human suffering and transcendence. A tribute to Renée Jeanne Falconetti who in my opinion delivered the best onscreen acting ever captured on a camera.
For me, The Passion of Joan of Arc is also a movie about feminism (A woman fighting for her truth/rights in a world run by men, and in the end she pays the ultimate price for this) and mental health issues, and religion. It could have been easily the case that Joan of Arc had schizophrenia.
For this project, I have used 194 screenshots from The Passion of Joan of Arc movie. All depicting Falconetti´s face. From the first scene when the interrogations start till the last shot where she is burned alive at the stakes. In the end, I have created 194 handmade collages in four different sizes. The collage process was mainly organic. The collage elements changed gradually, reacting to her condition throughout the movie, and becoming bleaker and darker the more we get to the end of the movie.
