The Atlas of Digitalization

Siemens partnered with Signal Noise to launch The Atlas of Digitalization a web-based application which reveals the readiness and potential of six major cities to embrace digitalization and develop new ways of living, working and interacting. Focusing on 3 interconnected themes of Mobility, Sustainability and Opportunity – the study assesses how the fourth industrial revolution has already augmented urban life around the world, and the potential impact it could have in the future.

The UX leverages native interaction for mobile. We have designed a walkthrough of the content using a long scroll format where the three core parts (introduction, city selector, and case studies) are linked together by a linear journey that takes the user through the narrative from industrialization to digitalization. To easily navigate the content from section to section and to access an individual city, a sticky navigation on desktop and a burger menu on mobile allows users to select one of the three main sections or a city page.

ENCODED SYSTEM

Each city is introduced by a ‘digital data portrait’ painting the city profile through many layers of data. 21 indicators were analyzed and aggregated to produce a Digital Readiness Score, considering areas such as smart electricity and transport systems, internet connections and digital governance services. The score reveals the current level of maturity of each city’s digital infrastructure, and its preparedness for a connected future. The 3D visual systems encode the multidimensional characteristics of a city and facilitate comparison across 3 lenses – mobility, sustainability, and opportunity.

These 3D "data portraits" are driven by data such as air quality, congestion levels, energy mix, risk from climate change, employment levels and quality of life to convey a more emotive sense of what the city is like to live in.

The Atlas of Digitalization presents in depth case studies of how cities in diverse parts of the world are using technology to achieve their objectives, from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to building an integrated city infrastructure.

A consistent design language was developed to brand the data visualisations which reinforced legibility, understanding and trustworthiness.
