Shape & Colour

For this project, I went with two images. The first is of myself, and the second is a picture of two soccer players on the Croatian National team, Dejan Lovren and Sime Vrsaljko.

TASK 1
In this task, I decided not to go with the blind contour technique as I had struggled a bit with it in the last project. I added some detailing in the shading so that moving forward I knew where the different tones of colour needed to be.
TASK 2
In Task 2 I began creating shapes to form the shadows, mid-tones, and highlights in the images out of three colours. For both my photos I decided to pull colours from the original photos I was working with. Both turned out to be warmer toned colours but vary in dark and lightness according to which of the three categories they fall under.
Next, I decided to drop the outline to see how the pieces turned out with just the shapes and colours forming the highlights, mid-tones, and shadows. I very much like how they turned out. I feel like the first image (left) could have been worked on a little more in depth but, it still shows a length of range.
TASK 3
Task 3a

Swatch Set 1
I liked the range and diversity of these images when put together together.
They ended up turning out really well. Once I completed the swatch transformation, I decided to drop the outline again in the second piece and really like the way it looks. The swatches for highlights, mid-tones, and highlights looks very nice and they all compliment each other well.
Swatch Set 2
Much like the first images, I eventually dropped the outline to see a cleaner final cut. I also love the way the various swatch patterns came together nicely for this piece. You can clearly identify the mid-tones, highlights, and shadows according to its swatch.
Task 3b
In this portion of Task 3, I took a more deranged point-of-view.
Swatch Set 3
I changed around some swatches in this step as well to change the depth and see what might fit better for each. After completing this task, I found that the blue tones for the first set of images (far left) was a better choice. As for the second set of images, I think that both the purple and red texture swatches look decent for the piece.

I grouped (Command + G) a few of the set shapes in my piece from the previous task and moved them to the sides which gave it a disorderly look that I loved. I thought it added character to the pieces.
Task 3c
In this part of Task 3, I decided to make minor changes to my previous task's work.
I took a similar approach in each image when editing the complete products for this final stage. I ended up pulling colours from the swatches and putting colours back into the pieces. I also ended up rearranging the different groups of shapes around the artboard. With the combination of both texture swatches and colour, I think each of the pieces turned out very well and diverse. They are chaotic, contrasting, and admirable.
TASK 4
As for the final stage of this exploration, I added the compositions together in one image and added a background that complimented the both of them. It almost looks like a selfie is being taken of the two gentlemen while I am in the back posing as a 'photo-bomb'. I started with the first image on the left and felt like I should try a portrait style background instead of a landscape one so I went ahead and found a portrait style background. I like how both compositions turn out but I lean more to the image on the right with the overall look of it.

As a whole, I like where I began with this exploration, and I like where I am at now. I feel like I learned a lot about Illustrator and shape & colour while completing this project. I am proud of my progress and my final compositions.
