SHAPE & COLOURS
Task 1 : Objective Drawing
The photo that I choose for the shape & colour project is the one that I took a few days ago. It contains the dog from the cafe called, "Playground" and the reason for choosing this photo is because the dog features clear highlights, mid-tones and shadows.
"
So firstly, I created a document on Adobe Illustrator with 2 artboards in size of 8.5"X11". Then I placed the photo on both artboards and made the template.
 "
"
On the first artboard, I used the basic stroke from the paintbrush tool to create a drawing with curve lines. For the outline of the dog, I used 0.5p to give a nice solid line while on the shadows and highlights, I used 0.25p to give contrast to the drawing.

On the second artboard, I used the pen tool to experiment with angle lines to create a geometric mood. For this drawing, I only used a 0.25p size stroke to give simplicity and symmetry to the drawing.
"
"
So during the process of drawing, I used 3 layers: the first layer for the photo, the second layer for the curved drawing and the third layer for the angle drawing.
"
"
And after a few tries with line drawing, I created two objective drawings with two different line types. With the photo giving me a simple but solid mood, I thought that it would be great to use for this project as I like the design of the scarf with simplicity. Even though the movement of the dog is wild and unpredictable, with the grey tone of the photo, I was able to see the restrained design inspired by it. When I was creating the line drawings, there were not any challenges since the outline and features (highlights, midtones and shadows) are very clear and easy to follow with eyes.
"
Task 2 : Tonal, Colour and Texture Mapping
"
When I started Task 2, I first chose to do the tonal mapping of the drawing as it is the basic. So I first created the colour scheme for the tonal mapping and then coloured the line drawing with the 2nd tone
"
"
Then I further added darker tones to the drawing to express the shadow of the dog
"

"
And on the finalize stage, I added the black colour to the darkest area while giving the highlight by using white
"
"
So this is the final piece for the tonal mapping of the line drawing. While I was creating it, I deleted and added some lines to make tones easy to follow.
"
"
And for the second mapping, I did the colour mapping by using various colours mainly based on brown tone to express a soft, geometric mood. When I was creating the drawing, I set some of the colours bit transparency to give dynamic features to it.
"
This is the final drawing of colour mapping. With the different colours, I was able to feature highlights, mid-tones and shadows which give a 3d effect to the drawing.
"
For the 3rd drawing, I did the pattern/texture mapping based on the photo. First, by using different patterns/textures mainly focusing on dotted design, I created a base of the dog's figure. Then I further added colours (black, grey) to give more definition to the drawing.
"
And this is the final drawing for the 3rd mapping experiment
"
"
For the last mapping, I did the collage of colour and pattern. Firstly, I outlined the dog by using a 0.5p brush then I divided sections based on the features (highlights and shadows). After finishing up the line drawing, I added colours (pink, blue, green, peach, dark grey) to give vividness mood to it
"
"
And this is the result of the final mapping experiment. After adding the colours to each section, I drew the various pattern to some sections to give a dynamic mood to it so that it would be visually appealing

From the mapping experiment, the tonal mapping drawing was the most challenging one since I had to be precise so I had to take some time to analyze the features (highlights, mid-tones, shadows) from the photo. But once I organized everything, it was fun to fill up each section and excited to see the final result. When it comes to the last experiment which is the collage of colour and pattern mapping, was the most exciting experiment that I did from Task 2 as I’ve never done something like this before. Also by adding vivid colours and patterns, the outcome is very visually appealing and I’m really happy with it.
"
Task 3 : Scarf Design
"
So when I start designing the scarf, I first set up the size (12"x12") and created 4 squares on the first layer. After doing it, I added the collage of patterns and colour dog drawing on each square with the centre being the focus. During the process, I chose to do the Bezold effect illusion to give dynamic expression.
"
However, after a few tries with colours, I decided to use 4 colours that were used in the dog drawing to make each of them have a different visual effect (even though they are all same drawings) while they are visually appealing and easy to read. After setting up the colours, I then added square patterns in white to make the dog drawings stand out.
"
"
After creating the border, I added more details such as gold chain patterns around the border as well as at the centre to make the design visually attractive.
"
"
By adding more gold details to the scarf, I was able to think more of the details that I want to add to the border. So after finishing up the gold parts, I created silver chains on the black background around the scarf to synchronize with the dog drawings as they have black being used in the colouring.
"
"
And this is my final scarf design. I added more of square patterns to make it interesting. Overall, my scarf design is collaboration of pastel colours with gold and silver chains. I think everything is very balanced while visually appealing.

When I first got the assignment, I had no idea what to create for the scarf design. However, after a few experiments using different mapping, I started to get inspiration from my own drawing and came up with this final design. When I was brainstorming task 3, I wanted to create a design that is simple but still dynamic to give joy to the audience. Also, I wanted it to be well-balanced which I think I nailed on the final design. If I can work on it again, I want to try using more intense colours to see how dynamic it could get. In terms of my scarf, I created it especially for my mom as she likes to wear a scarf all the time as well as her love for pets. Also as she loves calm colours, I was focusing on using not too bright colours. So overall, I think my scarf design is very balanced, and neutral while presenting various elements to the audience.
