SHAPE AND COLOUR EXPLORATION
TASK ONE
This was the first image I drew for this exploration. I knew that I really liked this image and wanted to use it, but it felt a little crowded. I drew a version without the flowers to try and focus more on basic silhouettes within the image, which I think I like better.

I attempted task two by going in with the dark tones, medium tones, then light tones. I used the original picture I took to try and see where the light sources were coming from and what objects were influenced the most. After reflecting on this image, I realized I wanted more shade within the image.
TASK THREE A
Before getting into textures, I wanted to explore some colour variations just to see my image in a different perspective.
Upon further brainstorming, I wanted to make my move to Toronto and my hometown apparent within this exploration. I thought this would add fluidity as the main line drawing is my nightstand in Toronto. My goal is to emote change and passion within these pieces, as these are the feelings that have consumed my life since the start of the semester.
TASK THREE B
I began with finding pictures of everything I liked about living in the city. I narrowed it done to the busyness (people walking on the street), which would end up being my light tone, all of the neon lights (Times Square), which would end up being my dark tone, and the fashion (rolls of fabric), which would end up being my medium tone. Overall, I found this image too busy and not displaying the message I intended for.
I tried to veer away from the first image, by choosing more toned down tones and pictures. I also wanted to only use pictures of Toronto because that would make the most sense for my theme. I find it hard to distinguish the tonal mapping in this image and I don't how each image has the same meaning.
In this image, I wanted each tone to represent my hometown in some way. The light tone is a picture of beside my bed at home, I wanted to incorporate this because I thought it was cool as the actual line drawing is of beside my bed in Toronto. The dark tones was a picture of Island Lake. I live on this lake and spend most of my time there so I really wanted to add this, although I do think its too light to be the darkest shade. Lastly, I chose a map of Orangeville to be the medium tone, this was my favourite clipping from this image.
In this image, I wanted each tones theme to be different each other. I made the lightest Toronto, although I don't like how pixilated it got and I don't think it's light enough. I made the medium the Orangeville map, and I made the dark, a fashion show. I added a picture of the textures of my walls in my room in Toronto. I thought this would be cool because this is what the wall actually looks like behind my nightstand, so it adds a sense of realism. Overall, I love the concept I just need to figure out a way to execute it better.
These tones are my final decision. I really like the contrast between them and how different they are from each other. I also like how I am able to tell a story just from these three images and some linework.
TASK THREE C
Overall, I decided to add the background because it adds more to the final exploration and the story. I also added in the original tones (black, white, and grey) and placed them behind their correlating images while lowering the opacity in the image just to let some of the colour peak through, making it easier to distinguish all the tones. I also put a slight filter on some of the tones to make them stand out and to add fluidity. This final piece turned out perfect to me, as it displays three very important things in my life right now in such a unique way.
