Zia Sun: Redefined
The Zia Sun is an interactive art piece using a custom designed PCD (printed circuit board) as well as a matching plastic sheet. It's purpose is to show the rising desert sun of the American SouthWest in an entirely-geometric framework, combining my love for nature with the Zig-Zag Art Deco design language. To do this, it uses 24 NeoPixels driven by an ATTiny85 microcontroller to display a complete day/night cycle
Zia Sun: Redefined was developed with two different states in mind. The first state is all the neopixels off exept for one in green. This is to indidate on which side the button is located, even in dark conditions. However, the other (or main) state is supposed to mimic the progression of the sun through the desert sky. In order, these states are Dawn, Day, Dusk, and Night. The base design was obtained open-source via NounProject.
This video showcases the animation in greater detail.
This custom PCB was created using EasyEDA and used a variety of surface mount components including a USB-C jack and a 5-row programming pin array.
This pick-and-place machine fills the PCB with the 24 neopixels in order to reduce build time, as it was required to the rest of the components to be hand-sautered.
