Sumac grows on the side of the road, at the edge of the forest, in the in-between spaces where it can see the sun. Sumac is a spice and a dye, and one of the last foods standing for birds at the end of the season. The flowers are actually berries, and they grow in the shape of a flame. Their rich red stands out in the grey palette of winter.
