The layout of the boxes dictated the composition of the illustration, which was supposed to evoke the very atmosphere of an event such as the Expo. The whole composition is built on that basis, through a mix of different elements: characters that interact with each other, forms reminiscent of kinetic sculptures, different textures and specific color palettes.
I still make sketches this way, drawing on paper and scanning. Based on that drawing, a vector illustration is built, with finer lines and a more complex structure.
The pre-final version of the color palette was a bit lighter. I am showing the entire illustration without the boxes, because certain subsequent changes in the size and layout of the boxes themselves were planned.
