Your Book - The Secret Life of Colours by Kassia St Clair
For this post, I will be talking about a book titled 'The Secret Life of Colours' by Kassia St Clair. The book will be about St Clair discussing her life-long obsession of colours and where they come from. The Secret Life of Colours tells unusual stories and they were all about the different levels of colours such as dyes, shades and hues.

I came across a chapter titled 'Colour Vision' which was about St Clair discussing how a human's vision is affected by staring at light. This light can be reflected off the surface of an object and enter a person's eyes. That prompted me to do research on colour vision and what I could gather is that colour vision may be due to the photoreceptors in the retina of the eyes, which are also known as cones. Each cone can be sensitive to red, blue or green light along with a short, medium and long wavelength.

There was sections in the book where St Clair would give solid information of the history about colours. She also mentioned why certain things like mixing lights of different colours creates white and why mixing paint of different colours creates a dark sludgy mess.

The way St Clair explained different subjects about colours in the book was clear and detailed. St Clair takes seventy-five of all of them including pigments and she would give some compelling explanation on all of them in each pages. She thoroughly explains shades, dyes and hues of every colour.

The book has some very telling stories like Every Seven-Five Colours, Van Gogh's Chrome Yellow Sunflowers or Punk's Fluorescent Pink. But then again, I would like to have the chance to read it again in my spare time. Like Maggie Nelson's book, I wish I could develop more understanding, which is something I would learn from St Clair's book.
