Bananas and Bull Chips

The All-Island Banana Growers Association is a co-operative of small farmers across Jamaica. The organisation's aim is to find markets for the produce of these small farms as a group, which should allow them to compete with larger entities. Processed products were naturally a part of that plan, including banana chips. Our aim with this project was to create branding for the co-op and packaging that would allow them to stand out in the international market, giving them a fighting chance in that larger, more competitive environment.

Their logo was re-imagined using a woodcut style that spoke to the brand's heritage (the co-op was founded in 1946), while giving it contemporary appeal. We experimented with a palette inspired by the black, green and gold of the Jamaican flag in keeping with the old-meets-new approach.
We travelled to the country's east coast to see some of the farms for ourselves and to learn what we could about the processes and people involved. Along the way, we discovered that the pointy spear at the end of a bunch of bananas hanging from the tree is known as the 'bull'. Inspired by phallic shape of that part of the tree, the term evoked a few chuckles on both sides of the explanation. Back in the idea room, we thought 'bull chips' would be perfect -- clean, but controversial enough to go go viral just by word-of-mouth. Of course we did another option, fully expecting the client to toss us out of the room.

We also did a couple calendars to create material that would give the AIBGA visibility in the market without the benefit of an advertising budget.
