Data Portraits: Study Habits

data portraits: study habits
The objective of this project as stated in the project sheet was to "promote connection and conversation through the collection, visualization, and sharing of soft data."
We started this project by creating short surveys about a topic of our choice. My chosen topic was study habits. We developed design systems to go along with our survey. Every answer to each question was visually represented with a corresponding design element on the data portraits.
design system and survey
We printed our surveys and handed them out to a group of classmates to collect data.
collected data
I used this data to create data portraits using the design system I created.

We then printed our data portraits, cut them out, and made them into buttons.
process of creating and distributing pins
The buttons were pinned to the surveys and handed out to the individuals
that participated.
We used this collected data to create a poster to display the data portraits. We began with research and sketches to figure out what layout and style we wanted our poster to have.
poster design research
I found ten poster examples that show what kind of layout I wanted my poster to have. I was drawn to posters with large, overlapping elements. I knew I wanted to incorporate this into my own poster.
sketches
After having a critique with a small group of classmates, we decided that my first sketch was the strongest and the most visually interesting. I began creating my poster in Illustrator. One challenge that I faced was figuring out how to fit all of the data portraits onto my poster because I had so many to work with. I tried out several different solutions, and got feedback from my classmates before arriving at my final solution. I learned how important it is to get feedback from peers.
