Düdel

Prusa Research / 2021 / Personal Project
Designed by Vinh Truong

Düdel is a 3D printed clock developed for Prusa Research's Timekeeper Competition, over three days. Designed to be easy to print with little to no supports. Düdel is available to download for free to encourage the open source & remix culture in the maker community with masses printing their own. Düdel has been featured on various design platforms & 3D printing sites.
Rapid Thumbnail Ideation.
A quick doodle exercise to explore forms. Focusing on the overall shape than the fine details by doodling with one stroke, later on, refining the idea with a monotone sketch.
Concept Illustration.
After converting thumbnails into a monotone sketch, an coloured illustration was developed. Colour was used to block out specific components that will have to be developed on CAD.
Product Visualisation.
I experimented with CAD drawings, making them look less standardised and more playful. As well as, explored a solid colour alternative of Düdel using Blender.
Test Models - Low Resolution 3D Prints.
Used to check fitting, part quality and ease of assembly. The parts were printed at 0.3mm & 0.8mm layer heights to quicken the development process. Small adjustments were made to fit the quartz mechanism for the final components.
Finalised Design - High Resolution 3D Prints.
With the parts tested, the final components were printed at a higher layer quality with a mix of PLA and Woodfill filament. With the final version of the components printed, it was ready for assembly. The assembly did not require any adhesives, as well.
How to Assemble Düdel.
01. Slot the clock face into the main housing. Insert the pegs, align and attach the split block.
02. Insert the quartz mechanism into the housing and attach the clock hands onto the mechanism shaft.
03. Attach the back panel with M3 screws. Slip on the exterior panel and Düdel is ready to use.
Final Notes.
Düdel is 3D printed clock that was designed and produced over the course of three days for Prusa Research's Timekeeper Competition. The design language & aesthetics of Düdel was influenced by contemporary and modernism interior design combined with iconic style of Braun's early innovations.

Düdel is now available to download for free from Prusaprinters, allowing a community of makers to produce their own clocks in a style that represents them as individuals. Düdel encourages the remix culture, with many already adding their own twists to the original design as well.
