FOX.COM FULL EPISODE EXPERIENCE
THE BRIEF
And like so many other project, the call to improve was the catalyst. Based on their data, FOX knew that the majority of the site visitors were coming to consume Full Episode. However the site was not focused on making that task simpler.
What Fox wanted was a new experience that could stand against some of the best in the industry, namely Netflix and Hulu. And make it responsive...
THE IDEA Was not to redefine the entire Fox.com experience but focus on creating a Full Episode destination that could stand on its own and build around that going into the future. The improvements would be around a better video player and discovery process.
USER EXPERIENCE
The User Experience process started with a requirements document from the FOX product group clearly spelling out the features sought. My job was to find a page and video player structure that would enable the experience to increase viewership length.
SHOW EPISODE LANDING PAGE
VIDEO PLAYER
The video player was designed to let users go from episode to episode or even show to show without having to leave the page they were on. Once the video player was present, the page would be in cinema mode. The experience goal was to keep user consuming video and thus in the cinema mode which provides the optimal viewing experience.
In addition to the video player controls, we also focused on the end of video experienced. Our recommendation was to lose the last post-role commercial which played before the viewer knew what the next video would be and modify the end card to be something where the next video was a lot more apparant. Additionaly we recommended that if the users were in single episode viewing mode, that the software automatically suggest the next episode.
