American Independence Park Sites

A graduate of the University at Buffalo, Michael Beitz is an artist who specializes in drawings, sculpture, and furniture design. In 2018, Michael Beitz designed and constructed a stone bench for American Independence Park in Jerusalem, Israel.

American Independence Park was created in 1976 for the 200th anniversary of the nation's independence. Another reason for its creation in Israel was to celebrate the relationship between the two countries. People that visit the park can explore Mount Yaaleh Ridge and the Sorek River Nature Reserve, both of which can be found in the northern part of the park. The area is features extensive woodlands as well as a number of archaeological sites. The park was built around an ancient Muslim cemetery, and visitors can observe old gravestones and mausoleums.

The park features a memorial in honor of the Challenger Space Shuttle victims, as well as one for Ilan Ramon (one of the shuttle's crew). It also has many picnic areas, active recreational sites, and water features, as well as climbing equipment for children. It is the largest park in the center of Jerusalem, and hosts events such as the Student's Day Celebration, pride parades, and music concerts.
