The award for Family Medicine Teacher of the Year for Virginia is a prestigious teaching award that does not commonly go to residency faculty. However, Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency faculty members have received this award 3 times in past years. Recipients were Dr. Frank Dennehy, Dr Andrew White, and Dr. Thomas Ball, in different years. The Residency is an organization that provides family medicine medical care and training.

Telehealth visits have expanded greatly at the Residency. Telehealth is highly beneficial in 2021 due to the pandemic as it can expand access and reach more people. Telehealth means that people can be examined in the comfort of their homes with a virtual physician which can be good for people that live in rural areas. At healthcare facilities, fewer people need to stay in line and wait for a physician to be available to examine them. It can also reduce physician burnout and the time it takes to examine every individual.

Telehealth can also improve patient engagement, and teach them self-care and practices that they need to do in between the examinations and treatments provided by doctors. Telehealth enhances remote monitoring in which people stay at home and their conditions can be examined and reviewed on a daily basis so that they do not get worse. In case patients suffer complications, with telehealth, doctors always know the issue and can get there in time to help the patient.
