ICE
Directed by Robert Valley
Once again, Passion Animation Studios gave my the amazing chance to animate the machines and many FX, along with handling a part of the final compositing on Robert Valley's "ICE" episode from Netflix "Love, Death + Robots - Volume 2" animated series.
It was so freakin awesome again.
I also worked on developping a 2d animated version of the frost whales.
While starting to take shape, it remained unused in the final film as it was decided at some point to go all CG for the whales. Though the 2d animations served as references for the CG version so I thought it would be nice to share and give it the opportunity to be seen as it directly brought to life Derek Thompson's awesome designs.
So here are some of the shots I worked on, I couldn't upload all of them as there are quite a lot but this is a selection of the most interesting and noticeable ones to work on, along with some process and breakdown videos that I hope you'll find interesting to watch as well.
Note that every machines have been rigged and animated with After Effects from Patricio Betteo's 2d designs, compositing and FX all done in After Effects as well. I worked exclusively as a 2d artist on this film (for both animation and compositing).
Hope you'll enjoy this glimpse of behind the scenes, thanks for watching!
> Machine and FX animation, final compositing of the opening shot
> The very first machine animation I did for proof of concept
> Sometimes you have to animate very tiny details, and it's often a lot of fun and the opportuynity to test weird techniques, so here is a bottle animation animated in 2d in AE:
> Machines stand by animation
> Wave FX animation and final compositing :
> Trippy place final compositing
> Frost Whales breakthrough
> Machines animation and sequence final compositing
Thanks for watching!
