BUTAJÓN_

Butajón es una propuesta de diseño de producto; consiste en una silla que responde a las dinámicas diarias de los trabajadores del sector 7 de agosto en la ciudad de Bogotá, Colombia. Esta silla tiene un cajón de almacenamiento de herramientas en la parte inferior; tiene dos alturas de trabajo que se ajustan a las alturas mayormente utilizadas por los trabajadores. También, está hecha de materiales provenientes del mismo sector: metal, tubos pvc, piezas de hierro, con el objetivo de que integrarla en el contexto del 7 de agosto.

BUTAJÓN_

Butajón is a product design proposal; It's a chair suitable for the daily dynamics of workers in the '7 de agosto' neighborhood in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. This chair has a tool storage drawer at the bottom; It has two working heights that adjust to the heights most used by workers. It is made of materials from the same sector: metal, PVC pipes, iron pieces, with the aim of integrating it into the context of '7 de agosto'.

CONTEXTO_

Teníamos un territorio definido con el que trabajar. Hicimos una deriva, recorriendo cada calle y carrera, como una primera aproximación al espacio. Queríamos conocer el lugar, los objetos, las situaciones y así, de alguna manera, personificar lo que '7 de agosto' comenzaría a significar para nosotros en este proyecto.

CONTEXT_

We had a defined territory with which to work. We did a drift, going through every street and race, as a first approximation to the space. We wanted to know the place, the objects, the situations and thus, in some way, personify what '7 de agosto' would begin to mean for us in this project.

OBSERVACIÓN_

En nuestra deriva, observamos que el 7 de agosto hace uso de objetos que normalmente son considerados basura o desechos. Los trabajadores utilizan llantas, zorras de carga [carretas metálicas], bumpers, para trabajar. Sin embargo, lo que más nos llamó la atención fueron los espacios donde trabajaban. Aunque habían locales, la gran mayoría trabajaba en el andén o en la calle.

OBSERVATION_

In our drift, we observe that workers on '7 de agosto' use objects that are normally considered garbage or waste. They use tires, hand trucks, bumpers, to work. However, what most caught our attention were the spaces where they worked. Although there were locals, the vast majority worked on the platform or in the street.

DESCUBRIMIENTOS_

Descubrimos que los andenes y la calzada en el sector 7 de agosto se encuentran constantemente llenos de mercancía y personas trabajando. Si no hay repuestos recostados en las fachadas, hay hombres concentrados jugando parqués o tirados en el suelo trabajando. El espacio que ocupan estos objetos, junto con las irregularidades del suelo, son lo que definen la función del andén para el sector. Todos estos elementos son signos de expansión y apropiación que, además, delimitan los espacios; una zona gris, en donde lo privado y lo público no interesan mientras los objetos dispuestos “no le hagan daño a nadie” porque -a la larga- es el andén su verdadero “local” y, por más regulaciones físicas que otros puedan imponer sobre él nadie borra el orden que ellos crearon. Será este mismo orden el que, además, dictaminará los roles y las relaciones entre los trabajadores.

INSIGHT_

We discovered that the platforms and the road in the 7 de Agosto sector are constantly full of merchandise and people working. If there are no spare parts lying on the facades, there are men concentrated playing parquet or lying on the ground working. The space occupied by these objects, together with the irregularities of the floor, are what define the function of the platform for the sector. All these elements are signs of expansion and appropriation that, in addition, delimit the spaces; a gray area, where the private and the public are of no interest as long as the objects arranged "do no harm to anyone" because -in the long run- the platform is its true "local" and, no matter how many physical regulations that others may impose on he no one erases the order they created. It will be this same order that will also dictate the roles and relationships between workers.

Con el objetivo de entender un poco mejor la dinámica de los andenes y el porqué era valioso para los trabajadores extender sus locales hasta el andén, hicimos un pequeño estudio de los andenes de una cuadra del 7 de Agosto. Miramos sus dimensiones y su disposición. Con esto en mente, nos fue más fácil revisar cómo se relacionaba cada trabajador con su porción de andén.

In order to understand a little better the dynamics of the platforms and why it was valuable for the workers to extend their premises to the platform, we did a small study of the platforms of a block of 7 de Agosto. We look at its dimensions and its layout. With this in mind, it was easier for us to review how each worker related to their portion of the platform.

Identificamos 4 tipologías de espacios.

We identified 4 types of spaces.

Nos dimos cuenta que, aunque sus andenes tenían características muy diferentes, era de la idea del andén de la que se estaban apropiando.

We realized that, although their platforms had very different characteristics, it was the idea of the platform that they were appropriating.

PROPUESTA DE VALOR Y SOLUCIÓN_

Una vez entendimos que el andén funcionaba para ellos como una extensión de su local, nos dimos cuenta que el valor de utilizar el andén como espacio propio les daba mejores condiciones de trabajo: más espacio, menos fogaje para herramientas que emitían calor; les facilitaba, además, hablar y consultar con otros locales, al mismo tiempo que promocionaban su trabajo a los transeúntes. Con esto mente, comenzamos a trabajar en propuestas de solución que potencializaran lo que los trabajadores ya veían como ventajas en su entorno.

VALUE AND SOLUTION PROPOSITION_

Once we understood that the platform worked for them as an extension of their premises, we realized that the value of using the platform as their own space gave them better working conditions: more space, less heat for tools that emit heat; It also made it easier for them to talk and consult with other locals, while promoting their work to passers-by. With this in mind, we began to work on solution proposals that would enhance what the workers already saw as advantages in their environment.

PROTOTIPOS_

Volvimos al 7 de Agosto y les contamos a varios trabajadores nuestras dos ideas concretas. Tratamos de imitar la experiencia con materiales reciclados, buscando imitar el resultado final que teníamos en mente.

PROTOTYPES_

We went back to August 7 and told various workers about our two concrete ideas. We try to imitate the experience with recycled materials, seeking to imitate the final result that we had in mind.

APRENDIZAJES_

Del prototipo de nuestra primera propuesta de solución aprendimos varias cosas:

1) Hay personas especializadas solo en transportar material con la zorra de carga [carreta metálica]. Dichas personas no tienen la necesidad de trabajar con ese material, solamente lo transportan.

LEARNING_

From the prototype of our first solution proposal we learned several things:

1) There are people specialized only in transporting material with the hand truck. These people do not have the need to work with this material, they only transport it.

2) A algunos trabajadores les parecía innecesario el acto mismo de sentarse sobre la zorra de carga [carreta metálica]. No conciben la idea de que la zorra de carga sea para sentarse en ella. La zorra era solo para mover material, no para estar quieto.

2) Some workers found the very act of sitting on the hand truck unnecessary. They do not conceive the idea that the hand truck is to sit on it. It was only for moving material, not for sitting on it.

Nuestra idea inicial era adaptar una mesa para que se pudiera agregar a las sillas que los trabajadores ya estaban acostumbrados a usar.

Our initial idea was to adapt a table to be able to attach it to the chairs that the workers used.

Sin embargo, decidimos adaptarnos a ellos. Buscamos, entonces, que lo que hagamos no interfiriera con su forma de utilizar las sillas. Los trabajadores le cortaban las patas a las sillas para poder tener una altura más cerca del suelo, en donde regaban sus herramientas. Así, les dolía menos la espalda y se sentían más cómodos trabajando entre la silla y el suelo.

However, we decided to adapt to them. We seek that what we do does not interfere with their way of using the chairs. The workers cut the legs off the chairs so they could have a height closer to the ground, where they spread their tools. Thus, their back hurt less and they felt more comfortable working between the chair and the floor.

PROPUESTA DE PRODUCTO FINAL_

Para la propuesta de producto final decidimos fundamentar la silla en las ideas de almacenamiento y alturas graduable:

For the final product proposal, we decided to base the chair on the ideas of storage and adjustable heights:

Una vez determinamos las alturas que les eran agradables [altura de "trabajo bajo" y altura de "trabajo alto"] comenzamos a hacer el prototipo, para poder llevárselos y observar cómo reaccionaban a ella, cómo se sentaban y qué impresiones les dejaba.

Once we determined the heights that were comfortable for them ["work low" height and "work high" height] we started making the prototype, so we could take them and see how they reacted to it, how they sat and what impressions it left on them.

AL FINAL...

En general, vimos una gran aceptación por parte de todos aquellos que probaron al silla. Muchos indicaron que sería un buen proyecto para hacer en el barrio. Otros, sin embargo, era notorio que no les agradaba la idea de introducir un elemento nuevo a sus dinámicas de trabajo. Parecen estar conformes con sus técnicas y herramientas. Después de todo, y eso no se puede negar, los trabajadores del 7 de Agosto son expertos en solucionar todo aquello que el día el día les traiga.

IN THE END...

In general, we saw a great acceptance on the part of all those who tried the chair. Many indicated that it would be a good project to do in the neighborhood. Others, however, clearly did not like the idea of introducing a new element to their work dynamics. They seem to be comfortable with their techniques and tools. After all, and this cannot be denied, the workers at 7 de Agosto are experts in solving everything that the day brings them.

RESULTADO_

Presentamos una silla regulable en altura, cómoda, con cajón para almacenar herramientas y fácil de transportar, gracias a su proximidad estructural a las células de carga [carros metálicos]. Una silla + cajón perfecta para trabajar en barrios como 7 de Agosto, en Bogotá, Colombia.

RESULT..

We present a chair with adjustable heights, comfortable, with a storage box for tools, and easy to transport, thanks to its structural proximity to the load cells [metal carts]. A perfect chair+drawer for working in neighborhoods like 7 de Agosto, in Bogotá, Colombia.
