This is a project we created for our sister studio, the original Atelier Ravel (www.atelierravel.com), which is devoted to the practice of painting and drawing to create colorfield canvases and figurative works on paper. We wanted to bring the tactile, sensuous, and even completely messy mediums of paint and charcoal to the more clean and austere worlds of book and digital design. We elected to honor—and even exploit—these qualities found so often in the painter’s studio and yet so rarely on the designer’s table. It was a delicious challenge to marry such seemingly uncommon styles, and to push—as we are always quite curious to push—the boundaries of more traditional design. It is also one of our favorite types of projects to work on: books or websites that convey so intimately an artist’s work that the volumes or channels become documents of an artist’s oeuvre and process, as well as works of art unto themselves.
