Interactive World War II Narrative

"I made a vow to God. If I made it out of this war alive, I would carry my youngest daughter on my back up the mountains to stairs of the cathedral to be baptized."

My great-grandfather, Nemecio Torres, was drafted after Pearl Harbor and sent to the Pacific Front. The only things I have left of him are a few faded photos and family stories. My interactive narrative served as means for me to look deep into my family legacy and understand how this impacted generations to come. I’m working on creating images and a story that are juxtaposed together to show the personal and collected human experience of the war.

This project has taken on a whole meaning, and I will continue to work on in new year.

Narrative Structure

It has a branching structure from a single point where a single starting point may lead to multiple developments and outcomes. This branching structure creates a divergently depth navigation system that is impacted by the user’s choices. Technically there are two navigational flows, the path of the soldier and the screen menus. The soldier’s path traverses on different points, whereas the screen menus will only show four item selections. Whichever item selection is chosen influences the soldier’s course.

Performance Objectives

1. Present an accurate WWII narrative that immerse the viewer in the story

2. Show how the consequences of our actions impact family.

3. Create an understanding of how soldiers cope with death breathing down their necks.
