GLYPH Magazine
Publication Design

Brief
Use a refined awareness of typographic detailing to construct a sophisticated typographic print magazine that explores the notion of place, cities, and type.

Inspiration
Insights drawn from the texts: Letters and Cities by Anna Gouveia, Priscila Farias, Patricia Gatto, and The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst. Additional inspiration was drawn from examples of type in urban landscapes and the typographical environment of my local area.

Concept
GLYPH magazine, founded in 2021 during Sydney's second lockdown, is an experimental publication that boldly explores hidden pockets of society, revealing concealed aesthetics and artistic manifestations. This independent magazine reinvigorates the printing realm with a meticulous blend of interactive, analog, and digital formats, captivating young creatives and earning a cult following.

Recognized as one of Australia's most esteemed experimental magazines, GLYPH provides a platform to inspire and showcase creative minds, authentically representing contemporary visual culture. Focused on spotlighting underexposed artists and offbeat aesthetics, GLYPH illuminates exciting scenes and movements worldwide, celebrating unique characters.

Drawing inspiration from design ideals of the past, the magazine takes readers on an impeccably designed journey through arcane location-based subcultures, highlighting rare typographic and visual sensibilities that define a place's cultural significance.

Issue 01 - 13 Robin
Issue 01 explores the rugged letterforms and obscure history of 13 Robin (13 Robinson Ln) – a forgotten and dilapidated residence in Sydney’s East. This hidden location boasts a spectrum of peculiar typographic characters and an abundance of rich textural letterforms. This issue tells the story of these charming letterforms – how they were once set with affection and now, through the natural ageing process, fall into a beautiful state of disrepair. Issue 01 intimately documents the gradual undesigning of a typeface over time. The rusted, decayed and atrophied letters of this neighbourhood organically visualise the forward march of time, undermining the durability of their forms.  Throughout these pages, type is understood as a ‘slow performing art’ that gradually unfurls, revealing the unique culture.
