Fear Street Monopoly: Packaging An Experience

This project is mainly a project that is centred around sustainable packaging. Out of the three briefs to choose from, I chose to tackle the limited edition board game. Although this brief was heavily illustration based I was willing to take on the challenge.

I ended up creating a Fear Street Monopoly Board. My reasoning for choosing Monopoly was that I felt as though I had a little bit more creative freedom when creating items such as the board, packaging, etc. and my reasoning for choosing to create a Fear Street Monopoly was due to the fact that I am a huge fan of the movies and feel as though there is a lack of merchandise available of the movie.

While designing the game, I also had to keep in mind about creating more environmentally friendly packaging wether that being researching the materials I would use or trying to create a design that lessens the use of single use plastic.
Directed by Leigh Janiak, the movies are adaptions of horror author R.L Stine’s young adult book series with the same title that was released on Netflix.

The movies are revolved around a group of teens who are trying to end a curse that has been around for hundreds of years. Each movie focuses on the how the curse has affected the town of Shadyside in the years 1994 and 1978 and the people in it. 1666 which is the last instalment of the franchise gives the full backstory. This is also one of the first horror franchises where the main love interests are an LGBTQ+ couple.

The movie trilogy was the first movie series that Netflix released weekly. With Fear Street 1994 being the first instalment of the trilogy, the release of the movie quickly made it to Netflix’s top 3 most popular titles and stayed there until Fear Street 1978’s release a week later which also made its way to the top 10 popular titles and the same happening with Fear Street’s 1666 released a week after that.

I highly recommend this movie trilogy if you enjoy the movies Scream, Friday the 13th or if if you just enjoy the slasher sub-genre in general. You will not be disappointed I promise!
Due to the movies being Rated R the target audience for this Monopoly is 17+
These are the dielines that were used for the base & lid of the box, the inner tray, a removable money holder as well as holders that are inserted into the tray
With this edition of Monopoly, the original rules and main objective of the game still remain the same, although there are some visible differences. Majority of the items on the board have been designed with the movies and some of the most memorable aspects in mind.
New Board
New Chance and Community Chest Cards
New Tokens
New Utility and Location Cards

Here is just a closer look at the illustrations created for this project
In terms of the sustainability, these would be the materials used:

Paper: This would be made out of 100% recycled cyclus paper. Cyclus is highly sustainable and is made without optical brightening agents.

Glue: Water based adhesive would be used. The bonding systems with this glue only require to be soaked in water prior to its application. As it does not require heat, this can reduce the manufacturer’s electricity bill.

Cardboard: Recycled paperboard would be used. Recycled paperboard is made from previous paper waste, has 6-9 plies of multiple substrates and contains a small amount of virgin fibres so that it can be recycled easier. If the trays were designed specifically to fit objects within box, they would also be made with this material as to not include any single use plastic.
DISCLAIMER! This is not an official Monopoly Game produced by the company nor do I claim it is.
