Yokkaichi Jazz Festival 9th

I am honoured to have worked on poster illustrations and merchandise design projects for Yokkaichi Jazz Festival 9th in 2020 and 2021, one of the biggest events in my small hometown, Mie prefecture in Japan.

私の出身地である三重県四日市市で毎年開催されている同市最大のイベントの1つ、2020年・2021年度の第9回四日市JAZZフェスティバル告知用ポスターの制作、販促グッズなどのグラフィックデザインを担当しました。

With a perspective of the future continuation of this annual festival that marked 9th this year, we set the main target of the poster as young generations in their 10-20s, to aim to raise their interest in jazz music and encourage participation in the local community.⁠

今回で9回目を迎える毎年恒例のイベントを、今後も長きに渡って存続させるため、告知用ポスターのターゲット層は主に10代から20代の若年層に設定しました。彼らにジャズ音楽について知ってもらい、町を活性化させる地域コミュニティイベントに積極的に参加してもらうことを目的とし、明るくポップな雰囲気に満ちたポスターを作成しました。

Those illustrations are created following the main festival theme ‘Give’ Em Swing', depicting the town of Yokkaichi become alive with music. It includes singing oil plant complex in Yokkaichi port while smokes out from chimneys, A young family dancing it away with uplifting music, and veteran musicians playing with confidence, and more.

ポスター用に制作したイラストレーションは、イベントのテーマ「みんなでswing」にならい、音楽で活気づく四日市の街の様子を描いています。モチーフの中には、煙をはきながら音楽に合わせて歌う四日市港の石油コンビナート、軽快な音楽に乗せて踊る若い家族、そして貫禄の演奏を披露するミュージシャンなどが含まれます。

Initially, this project started back in early 2020 for the October event before the pandemic hit. The project which was still an early stage then paused while seeing how the situation goes, until a decision of event cancellation has been announced. Then the event platform was moved to online and I finished the poster as ‘unfinished version’ for the online festival with a scope of officially finishing it in the next year’s event in the town, as well as with the hope of making it finally happen.

元々このプロジェクトは、2020年10月のイベント開催に向けて、同年の初頭からスタートしました。しかし、その直後に発生した世界的なパンデミックを受け、先々の安全確保に見通しが立つまで、プロジェクトの進行は一旦保留となりました。しかし、最終的に現地でのイベント開催は中止を余儀なくされ、その代わりにオンライン上での開催に移行されました。すでに制作途中だったポスターは、翌年の現地開催への願いも込めて、あえて未完成のままオンラインイベント用ポスターとして発表されました。

After a year of early 2021, the project was resumed even though the forecast of the situation remained unclear. However, another wave hit the region when we are on the final step of the completion, and our event organiser eventually made a bitter decision to cancel the event again, prioritising everyone’s safety first.

I⁠⁠ would like to express my deep regard for all event organisers and volunteer staff who get together with love for music and working hard toward the festival making happen.⁠⁠ For me, the experience once working as an illustrator and designer for my hometown in Japan will forever spot a light on my freelance career. I send all my gratitude for them to work with me!

そして翌年の2021年初頭、先の状況予測が未だに難しい中、昨年の無念を晴らしたいという思いも含めて、主催者の方々と共に開催実現に向けてプロジェクトを再開させました。しかし、制作最終段階に差し掛かったところで再び感染が拡大し、来場者の安全性を最優先した結果、やむを得ず同年も開催中止となりました。⁠⁠⁠⁠

音楽が好きという一心のもとに集い、準備を進めてこられた全ての主催者の方々、そしてボランティアスタッフの方々にとっては、断腸の思いの中止決定であったかと思います。この場を借りて、関係者の全ての皆様に敬意を表したいと思います。私個人としては、故郷の街の一大イベントにデザイナーとして選出して頂けたこと、大変光栄に思っています。またこの経験は、フリーランスという生き方を選択した私にとって、生涯の誇りとなると確信しています。
