Lagoon of Orbetello in Tuscany

team - Laura Korach, Szymon Kaniewski, Natalia Szczepaniak
The aim of the project is to create simple white cubatures which complement the wildness of the Ortobello Lagoon. Such reserved, geometrical architecture intertwines with the greenery by creating strong contrasting experience. Strict distinction of the place for humans underlines the demand of the nature to remain untouched. New architecture inflicts as little harm as possible on the site, conceptually as well as visually. Observation cabins are raised above the ground on steel poles allowing the nature and animals to flow freely between the architecture.
The steel framework creates the basis for modular window grid. Three types of openings generate different sighting possibilities and are located on three different levels encouraging the visitors to observe the landscape from various angles and positions. Moreover, from a distance those windows resemble miniature pictures painted on a white wall. Contemplating nature and fickle animals through small rectangular openings gives the observer meditation-like experience.

visitors center
Visitors’ center consists of two longitudinal, single-story blocks. In order to break the monumental character and create a building that corresponds with the human scale, the cubatures are divided into segments. Between those blocks there are terraces with greenery which enable the visitors to connect with the landscape of the reserve whilst being in the center. One building houses a museum, a bookshop and workshop rooms and has two green patios at their disposal. The other one consists of a guest house and a restaurant which are connected by a shared terrace where visitors can enjoy tuscan sunsets.
