Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger All Went Down – The Massive Outages!

Facebook and its official family applications, i.e., Instagram and WhatsApp, the social media giants and the most used mobile applications, blinked out for hours. The result of this disruption caused massive panic all over the world as the billions of users connected globally were cut off from their most go-to platforms. And for the business community, this interruption was a fearful blow as they were cut off from their customers.

The news spread like a grass fire as people couldn’t check their news feed, communicate, upload, conduct transactions, and do many other activities. In fact, many of the Facebook workers were locked out of their offices for hours. As New York Times reported, Facebook’s internal communication platform known as ‘Workplace’ was also taken out, leaving hundreds of employees completely unable to do their jobs.

As reported on Monday, i.e., 5th October 2021, a similar issue was recorded in April 2019 when the gigantic mobile applications crashed for around two hours before returning to complete functionality.

But this time, the crash lasted for around six hours in total. It has been said to be the most prominent failure, with approximately 10.6 million problem reports globally. On top of that, the disruption had affected around 80 million users around the world.

The Early Phase

It all began on Monday when millions of WhatsApp users around the world faced massive outages in sending messages, downloading images, or even calling their friends or family. At first, the users thought it to be internet malfunctioning or something happening with their networking. But as soon as the whistleblower started reaching people, it spread like a grass fire and soon emerged a headline.

It was around 11:40 a.m. Eastern time when users reported interruption and unavailability. And within a few minutes, the social media giant application blinked like it never existed.

The Statements

As soon as the social media mobile applications went down for an elongated duration in history, users and business communities worldwide were affected beyond our fancies. The latest update reported by Facebook’s CTO Mike Schroepfer says that ‘Facebook is experiencing networking issues and teams are working as fast as possible to debug and restore. However, there is no timeline on when the services or functionality would come back to normal.

Another statement from Andy Stone reported, ‘We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.’

In the initial phase of the reports, Facebook apologized, saying that,

‘To all the people and businesses around the world who depend on us, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused by today’s outage across our platforms.’

‘We have been working as hard as we can to restore access, and our systems are now back up and running.’

‘The underlying cause of this outage also impacted many of the internal tools and systems we use in our day-to-day operations, complicating our attempts to diagnose and resolve the problem quickly.’

‘Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication.’

‘This disruption to network traffic had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, bringing our services to a halt.’

‘Our services are now back online, and we are actively working to return them to regular operations fully.’

We want to make clear at this time we believe the root cause of this outage was a faulty configuration change.’

‘We also have no evidence that user data was compromised as a result of this downtime.’ On the other hand, WhatsApp informed its users by tweeting that ‘We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!’

Amid the prevailing difficult situation, Instagram also made its statement saying that ‘Instagram and friends are having a little bit of a hard time right now, and you may be having issues using them. Bear with us, we’re on it!’

Furthermore, several Facebook workers called the massive outage a ‘snow day,’ which was initially a sentiment that everyone focused on amongst all the discussions. It was made by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram.

These were some of the official statements made by the social media giant on the result of massive outages worldwide. But after the nerve-wracking work for hours, the functionality of these applications was restored upon which the chief executive of giants, Mark Zuckerberg, stated;

‘Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger are coming back online now. Sorry for the disruption today – I know how much you rely on our services to stay connected with the people you care about.’

The Shocking Result

The results of this six-hour prolonged outage resulted miserably for the social media applications owner Mark Zuckerberg.

As reported by Business Insider, Zuckerberg loses around $7 billion in a day as his applications face rare outages. As a result of this disruption, his total fortune declined to $120.9 billion in total and has dropped in position to fifth world’s richest person, behind Bill Gates, according to Bloomberg’s Scott Carpenter.
