Srishti Collective—
Interactive Digital Design for the Elder Demographic

Project Brief/Background:

Srishti Collective is an event that provides a platform for the display of the meaningful culmination of learning during the graduate years. It is a medium for the design practitioners to display their application of knowledge and skill. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the number of digital interactions have increased manifold. From jobs and  interviews to school and college classes; business meetings to conferences, everything is now being conducted in a virtual space. This urges the Srishti Collective to be conducted on a digital platform. The work of the graduating batch of students must be showcased in an informative and interactive manner in order to engage the people viewing the collective. The underlying theme to my project is to ease the navigation of the virtual medium for the older demographic. This area of enquiry sprouts from my personal experiences with grandparents where they have been unable to view my work on one single platform. This project carefully tackles the issue of digital comprehensibility faced by the elderly.

Project Goals:

In today’s digital era, bad design means excluding whole sections of the population from the benefits of technology. By following some simple principles, one can create more inclusive products that work better for everyone, especially the people who need them the most.
In the world’s first ever collective pandemic, the Srishti Collective will be presented on a digital platform. I wish to create a virtual exhibition and curate the works of students in a manner that is easy and convenient for users to perceive and engage with. I intend to tackle the problem of understandability of navigating through an interactive virtual space amongst the older generations  of user groups.

Insights Gathered:

A defined target audience gave my project the required boost and helped me in making the right design decisions for the audience.
Visual hierarchy is of key importance since I am dealing with a demographic where visual impairments are common.
How can I improve the navigation experience for the user groups while taking their aspirations and needs into account?
The motor skills, vision and attention span of these people tend to decline with age, making a complex display of information difficult for them to perceive.
