The Street Heals Me

Solo Exhibition at Tosca-Art, Ankara, Turkey
Curated by Barış Seyitvan
The Street Heals Me was my first solo show that concentrates on the concepts of everyday life, geography, and boundaries.  Recently I was pouring red paint and making lines on the streets in the center of Ankara. People walking and cars passing by crossed over the red line. Further, I recorded my performance on video, trying to examine the lives that are shaped by the constant interference of the ideological apparatuses and the boundaries drawn around the individuals and the geography.

My aim is to emphasize the transformative power of everyday life through the invigorating motion of the street. “Street” is also used as a metaphorical representation of everyday life. It is considered that everyday life is an encountering area of individuals with concrete other; meanwhile, individuals attain consistent identities. Ideological apparatuses produce and maintain themselves by interfering in society's everyday life. This exhibition also reminds the audience of the desire of Situationist's which concentrated on changing mundane everyday life and concluded with transforming the entire world. Furthermore, the exhibition investigates gender stereotypes; life in urban; identity; and the ideological apparatuses that regulate social life such as patriarchal family, education system and culture. By doing that, this exhibition refers to the desire to form new situations by the effort of the individual to build her/his existence in everyday life without an impact of external and determinist interferences.
