Book Site Launch - December 2020

This is a one-page site for the book launch of Kathy Acker in Seattle marking the independent publisher Misfit Lit's debut with a selection of limited edition titles focusing on independent writers and the alternative literary scene in the Pacific Northwest.

Edited by Daniel Schulz from the University of Cologne in Germany who is curating the Kathy Acker Reading Room at the university, this volume documents the events and collective exhibitions, panels, and discussions among participating local, regional and international artists, authors, curators and scholars tracing Kathy Acker's lasting legacy in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

The independent writer lived in Seattle in 1980 when she was working on her influential early novel Blood and Guts in High School, and returned to the city in 1989 for a literary residency through the Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA). It was at CoCA where she met with the young performance artist and writer Kathleen Hanna based out of Olympia, Washington, and encouraged her to start a band (Bikini Kill) that gave rise to the creative Riot Grrrl feminist movement of the 1990s. Inspired by Acker and her writing, Hanna scaled her role as a creative influence through music and the Riot Grrrl movement she initiated. Hanna later went on to form additional bands that included Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin.

The three-day symposium and art exhibitions in early September 2019 were organized by curator Larry Reid, and recorded for the purpose of gathering the panel discussions and conversations about the lasting influence of the late Kathy Acker and how her time and literary work in Seattle continues to resonate.
