A screenwriter writes scripts for films and TV shows. To become a screenwriter, you need to learn to write. Then dedicate the time and commitment to honing this skill. The next step is to study what sells. Take note of what scripts are being picked up and read other screenplays. If you’re now confident enough, you would have to move to somewhere the work happens. Los Angeles and New York are prime locations and home to many production companies. After moving, you must find a mentor who will get you a foothold in the industry.

Getting any job in the film industry is a viable method of making connections. Your job doesn’t need to be fancy. Just use the opportunity for continuous learning. You do not need to acquire a graduate degree in screenwriting, but getting one helps you learn about structure and form. Then create a portfolio of your works, hire a manager and an agent to develop and market your scripts. With a bit of luck, you would sell your first script early.
