The "Marshmallow Challenge"

This is an example of a very popular team building exercise I introduced to our new hire training classes called the "Marshmallow Challenge." Teams of 2 or 3 would work together to build the tallest free-standing structure using only raw pasta, string, and tape. The Challenge became super popular and a huge success when we were able to train our new hires in-person.

After the Marshmallow Challenge, new hires would participate in a Q&A with the Trainer about how easy or difficult it was to work in their teams. The new hires would provide their constructive thoughts on how and I certain individuals took certain roles in their group during the exercise and their thought processes behind the design of their structures. New hires were also shown a Ted Talk about the Marshmallow Challenge, which reveals that the highest scoring participants in the Challenge have been Architects and Kindergarteners, which always gets a great reaction from the trainees.

I would highly recommend this team building exercise for any team working in-person.
