Odd one out
Editorial
London is a melting pot of people from all walks of life. With each person's opinion coloured by their different experiences. Different perspectives. Different backgrounds. Different cultures.
I loved that when I moved to London. The thought that Brexit would change that is what sparked my family's decision to move from the UK. I still consider myself an immigrant despite living half my life in London, and raising my family there.
I'm very happy we moved to Amsterdam - it's an exciting, thriving city full of opportunities, and an amazing place to raise a family. But London and its colourful mix of everyone from everywhere will always hold a special place with me.
Celebrate diversity. It's an opportunity to learn from one another and gain insights into worlds that differ from our own.
Process
Before starting this illustration, I knew I wanted to create a grid of diverse characters. The details would be minimal. As none of the characters interacted with one another, it meant I could skip the usual sketching stage where I work out the composition, and start straight in on the line work.
Colour
I love this colour palette. It's playful and fun - exactly the optimistic feeling I wanted my illustration to include.
